Are You Really Saved

by Rebekah Prewitt

Many times we come across people who tell us that they are saved. Yet they live with their boyfriends or girlfriends. Then when we ask them, How do you know that you are saved? We often hear them say things like:

"I live a good life"
"I believe I am a good person"
"I ask God for forgiveness everyday"

One person actually told us that he believes he is going to Heaven because his grandma went to church. But, is a person really saved based on these kind of responses?

Hear what God has to say on this issue: "But fornication, and all uncleaness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints" (Ephesians 5:3, See also 1 Cor. 5:11- 13).

So, if you call yourself a Christian, how is it that you are still living in sin? Well, here is what people will tell us, "We are all sinners, and we sin everyday." But hear again what God has to say,

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. . .Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:26-29).

So, are you convinced that you are not really saved because you are willfully living in disobedience to God, which then makes you a sinner and not a saved person?

Remember, Jesus says in the book of Revelation,

He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Rev. 21:7,8).

Are you ready to meet God?

My friend, yes, you can be ready to meet God if you repent for your sins, but you can't continue to do them. You have to leave that boyfriend or girlfriend behind and be obedient to God. Don't wait around thinking, Well, we will go to church together, or I will try to get him or her saved. This is not what God wants you to do. He wants you to step out by faith and trust Him to take care of you. He is not looking for us to make some sacrifice to go to church, or read our Bibles or do good deeds. If we are not going to obey what we read in His Word, all of that is worthless.

Have you ever heard of Saul's story in the Old Testament? Saul was an interesting man.

God called him to go and destroy an entire nation named the Amalekites - men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys. So, Saul and his men went and slaughtered the nation, but Saul decided to keep back some of the best things for himself. So God sent the prophet, Samuel, to go and talk to him. The prophet said, Is it true that you didn't destroy everything? And Saul said, "It's true that the army spared the best of the sheep, goats, and cattle. But they are going to sacrifice them to the LORD your God. We have destroyed everything else." So the priest said, "The LORD sent you on a mission and told you, 'Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until they are all dead.' Why haven't you obeyed the LORD?. . . What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams." So God rejected Saul because he disobeyed Him.

My friend, God is not looking for you to make a sacrifice to go to church. He wants you to start practicing what you already know to do. Start with what you know. You know it is wrong to sleep with your boyfriend or girlfriend, so start obeying God and stop this behavior. He says, "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17). Don't deceive yourself into thinking you are fine. The half brother of Jesus said, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22). You say, It is too hard to do that. Trust God my friend. His strength is made perfect in weakness. Are you weak? He will help you if He sees you are looking to obey Him. Every great person stepped out by faith, you can too!

You say that you are saved while you are living with your boyfriend or girlfriend, but the Bible says to you,

"My brothers and sisters, if one of you wanders away from the truth, [that would be you] and someone helps that person come back [that's us], remember this: Anyone who brings a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner's soul [you] from death and will cause many sins to be forgiven" (James 5:19,20 NCV).

This is what we are hoping to do for you is to bring you back to the truth.
