A Fresh Start

by Rebekah Prewitt

Do you want to have a fresh start? Do you want to really erase everything in your past and even in the present and just start all over again? If you answered "YES!!!" then I have good news for you. It is possible to have a clean slate.

First, start by dropping your net. Dropping my net? What in the world are you talking about, you wonder.

One day while Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Andrew and Peter, casting a net into the sea: they were fisher men. And he said unto them, Follow me . . . And they instantly dropped their nets, and followed him (Matthew 4:18-20).

If you want a fresh start, you also must immediately drop your net. Maybe your net is tangled up by refusing to apologize or some kind of compromise. Maybe it is a girlfriend or boyfriend, or unholy movies or websites, or maybe it is years of guilt for something you have done in the past.

There was a group of people mentioned in the book of Acts who practiced witchcraft. As soon as they believed in God, they came and confessed and exposed their deeds before the people. Here is how they dropped their nets:

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver (Acts 19:19).

In order for you to truly have a fresh start, you must drop your baggage now! You can't wait hoping things in your life will get better. These people that practiced witchcraft brought all of their expensive items and burned them. They were ready for a change. What about you? Do you have things you need to expose before God and get rid of? Do it now!

You cannot have a fresh start by adding to your circumstances. Instead you must learn to subtract. Take away. Don't add. You must immediately take the initial step of saying goodbye to things (i.e. statues or idols, relationships, hang-out spots, job, parents, attitudes, etc.) and listen to the voice of God calling you out to follow Him. Andrew and Peter could not have followed Christ until they first dropped those nets. Below are some other examples of people who did not wait but had a fresh start at this thing called life:

These are examples of people who were serious about having a fresh start in their lives. It is possible, and it can happen for you too. Don't even entertain the thought in your mind that you are too far gone or that you are too old. The man Abram was 75 years old when God called him to leave his country and family to follow Him, and guess what? Even at that age of 75, Abram dropped his net and listened to the voice of God calling him. Why not use the measure of faith God has given you and believe that He can make all things new in your life again.

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.
And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

(Rev. 21:5)
